Cleaning your Grill

Proper maintenance and cleaning of your BBQ grill is essential for its longevity. Furthermore, you should always clean off your grill right after it has been used and is still hot. This allows you to easily remove any food deposits that may have built up and reduces the amount of scrubbing you have to do, which may wear down and possibly chip your grates and shorten the life of your BBQ grill.

If you are still in the market to buy a BBQ grill, remember to consider what type of grilling you may be doing and choose an appropriate grill that fits your needs. This will help you in cleaning and maintaining your grill as well. For instance, if you plan on mostly cooking burgers, a plain stainless steel grill grate may just be fine for you, and they are perfect on charcoal grills like the Weber One-Touch Gold 22.5” Charcoal Grill.

However, if you plan to do more exotic grilling like kebabs or chicken, try BBQ’s that feature cast iron or porcelain enameled grates to give you a good sear but also ensure your meat is cooked all the way through without burning, like the Weber Genesis E-310.

Here are some tips on properly maintaining and cleaning your grill.

For stainless steel and cast iron grates, turn burners on high after each use and close lid for at least 15 minutes. Then brush the cooking grates with a wire brush to remove any residue left by food.
If you need to clean ceramic grates, try soaking in warm soapy water for 15 minutes and then gently scrubbing off residue with a soft brush. Try not to use a hard wire brush, or your grate may start to lose its luster and start chipping.
Wipe clean all exposed areas of the grill, such as working surfaces and hoods, to remove grease or residue.
Lava stones or ceramic briquettes needed to be moved around periodically to remove any grease accumulation. If you don’t then they will just flame up the next time you use your grill and lose its ability to retain heat.
Clean warming pans, if you have them, with steel wool and warm soapy water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly so that no soapy residue transfers to your food when you use it the next time.
If you need to store your grill, make sure that you remove all ash deposits and/or your gas tank is completely empty. Cover with a grill cover and store in a cool place.
